Lee County school board is creating a new policy that invites students to bring and use their own laptops, tablets, e-readers and smart phones in school whenever teachers find it appropriate. Lee is following the footsteps of Collier County schools, which established guidelines for student devices last year, and is becoming among the first in the state to encourage students to use their own devices.

“This is coming and it’s kind of crazy children use technology everywhere, but they can’t bring it to school,” Superintendent Nancy Graham said. “You can tell them not to use their phones, but they can text without looking. You resolve a lot of traffic issues in your hallways when you say, ‘look it up,’ on your phone, instead of sending them to the media center. It’s the 21st century.”

The policy, which the board got a first look at this afternoon at their briefing meeting, requires students to use the district’s Wi-Fi network and to avoid using their own hotspots.
